numerous countries wanted to have some of Japan's goods and supplies and used force to made Japan do what they asked. Internal the samurai wanted to be payed more but couldn't because the daimyo didn't have enough money to pay them with and the daimyo weren't happy because it took them more money to provide and maintain their lifestyle.
